The Inuit invented the first sunglasses by cutting slits out of bone to prevent snowblindness. Modern lens materials protect the eyes from harmful UV rays in addition to providing optimal visual performance and comfort. Anti-glare coatings and polarized lenses cut through the glare to aid visual concentration. Maximum darkness is provided by mirror coatings. Remember, the density of tint does not reflect the level of UV protection - it is the lens material which provides the UV block.
Can Cheap Sunglasses Harm My Eyes? Irronically, the lenses are usually polycarbonate which have 100% UV protection. However, knock-off sunglasses have poor optical quality, causing distortion and eyestrain. The low quality frame and lens may not be durable and can cause eye injury on impact in sports. As well, there is no guarantee of UV protection despite the labels. In some cases really cheap knock offs may use cellulose acetate lenses which have no UV protection, unlike polycarbonate. Thus, the dark tint dilates the pupil, allowing even more UV into the eye. UV damage accumulates throughout your lifetime and can lead to early cataracts and macular degeneration. Be especially careful in your sunglass purchases from flea markets; you do get what you pay for.
